Florals and Succulents
Gaining popularity in the last year and sure to continue to be popular in 2019, succulents and floral designs are wonderful and yummy as a design trend! These aren’t really your traditional floral accents, these are bigger and better! Instead of traditional roses, the trend is now to create intricate floral designs with desert plants, including all sorts of succulents.
Fruit
Another beautiful trend for the upcoming year is fruit accents. People are using all sort of fruits design these cakes and cupcakes. We’ve seen strawberries and blueberries, like in the image above, as well as other more exotic fruits, like figs.
In addition to fruit, people are also using other plants and greenery to make a statement on their cake. If you’re looking for a more natural wedding aesthetic, using live plants and fruits can be a wonderful focal point and delicious added treat!
Minimalism
Minimalism has been a trend across all industries and in the wedding cake world, that means simple, classic designs without a lot of extra fuss. We’ve seen all white cakes, all black cakes, cakes with super minimal designs, even cakes with sharp lines and edges, including rectangular and square shapes. Minimal-style cakes are often smaller as they are limited to only a couple tiers. Sometimes they are a small as one tier!
If you’re looking for an understated, ultra-modern cake that will draw attention for all the right reasons, a minimal design may be perfect for you.
Cakes that look like anything but
These are so much fun! Okay, so traditional wedding cakes may be super beautiful and formal, but another trend hitting the Pinterest boards are wedding cakes that are super personal to the bride and groom, including cakes that embody the kinds of foods they love. These cakes are designed to not even look like a cake, just like our pancake cake above!
There are all kinds of television shows dedicated to creating these masterpieces. But, we’ve also seen people ask for cakes that look like blocks of cheese, cookie cakes, book cakes, waffle cakes, and many more. Really the more creative the better for this trend!
Brushstrokes and textures
Another big trend for 2019 is going to be interesting and unique textures, including brushstrokes, ruffles, simple lines, and even muted sparkles. These cake designs often take their inspiration from nature, evoking the natural weather of rocks, the lines of flowers, or the look and feel of an old painting.
Other popular textures are marble, geodes, embroidery, and fabric.
