Browned Butter. What the heck is it? And what do I do with it? One of those fancy foodie things, right??!
Browned Butter is simply made with one ingredient – butter! It’s cooked until the milk solids caramelize, and it turns a nutty brown color. (And smells amazing!) It takes any recipe or meal and kicks it up a notch.
To make it, place butter in a light-colored saucepan over medium heat. Let it simmer, giving it a swirl every few minutes, until it bubbles and the color begins to darken. You will see some dark specks on the bottom, that’s a good thing! Once it is cooked to your desired caramelization, remove it from the heat immediately, placing into another bowl. (Otherwise, it can continue cooking and your butter might burn.)
So what can you do with Browned Butter? (Besides pour it over everything?)
- – Replace the butter in your favorite cookie dough with Browned Butter! Just make sure to let it cool first. Chocolate Chip & Snickerdoodles are my #1 picks for this use.
- – Drizzle it over pancakes, waffles, or French Toast.
- – Use it in mashed potatoes instead of regular butter.
- – When making Rice Krispy Treats, brown the butter first before adding the marshmallows.
- – Use it as a sauce in my favorite gnocchi dish – Roasted Butternut Squash Gnocchi
- – Pour it over popcorn.
- – Use it on the outsides of grilled cheese.
- – Try it in these banana bars by one of my favorite bloggers – Banana Bars with Browned Butter Buttercream
